(E, H) Equal Beating Victorian Temperament with Bill Bremmer, RPT, Madison, WI Chapter – Hear an aural tuning demonstration of a non-equal temperament useful for all types of music.  Hands-on trials by participants as time permits.  Electronic tuning information is also provided.

(E) Fundamentals of Hammer Filing with Flugelbauer, Dean Garten, RPT, CA and John Wilson, RPT, UT - A demonstration of proper single or multiple hammer filing techniques whether with a paddle or sandpaper strips. Whether doing serious re-shaping or just a light filing 'clean-up', we will also explore which grits are used and when, preparing paper (with tape) so it doesn't tear, cloth backing vs. paper backing plus what types of sandpaper or sanding methods work best in a given situation.

(E) How To Be A Mentor – How To Be An Apprentice with Randy Potter, RPT, Randy Potter School - However someone gets their basic training, they need some hands-on - preferably with someone more experienced than they are. Many intermediate and advanced technicians would like to help out newer tuners but aren’t sure how. This class shows technicians how to mentor newer members, and new members how to get a “casual apprenticeship” with one, or more, technicians in their local PTG chapter.

Subject matter includes design and pattern transfer, safety and ergonomics, chip carving (the basics, miniatures and big projects), Hungarian Kopjafa, finishing, staining, pressure treating and minimizing drying checks.

(E,H) Twin Dollies - Vertical Installation with Isaac Sadigursky, RPT, Los Angeles, CA Chapter - Learn the correct tools, supplies, and techniques you need for safely tipping vertical pianos and installing twin dollies under them. Volunteer participants will get hands-on experience at tipping the piano! If time permits, the class will include proper installation of Leg Dollies for grand pianos, safe techniques for moving grands in the home, and installation of caster cups under both grands and verticals. (E) About the Ravenscroft Piano – Concept to Creation -Enjoy a day with the creator of the Ravenscroft piano, Michael Spreeman, RPT, Guest instructors include Ulrich Sauter of Carl Sauter Pianofortemanufaktur, Robert Springer, and Nick Gravagne, RPT.
Our day will begin with a special performance featuring guest artist Bob Ravenscroft.   Following the mini-concert we will discuss:
• The construction process of the Ravenscroft piano
• Action designing in CAD - “everything is a variable”
• The interrelationship between the soundboard and scale design
The information will be applicable for all levels of service work whether it be recognizing design issues or implementing rebuilding modifications.

(E) Action Restoration the Renner Way with Rick Baldassin, RPT, Richard Davenport, RPT, Carl Teel, Renner USA, and Jack Brand, Wurzen Felt Co.Accompany a grand piano action through a complete restoration:  parts alignment, force vectors and problematic action geometry. Factory slides demonstrate the felting process from start to finish. Watch instructors hang a set of hammers, demonstrate pre-voicing techniques and hammer polarity, and establish the treble strike point. String and hammer voicing techniques will be reviewed and final voicing includes a single needle tool through the strings. Hear the finished piano demonstrated in a short performance. Stay all day and you’ll take away an organized plan to successfully restore your next grand piano action.

This class addresses the many questions that we need to consider when assessing a piano for serious shop work. We need to know the owner’s expectations, the possibilities inherent in the piano, the required resources in both labor and materials, and also whether we have the skills to do the job. This class helps you to focus on and answer these questions.
Appraising the Steinway Piano with Gordon McNelly - Learn methods and criteria used by the Steinway Service Department to assist customers in understanding the value and potential of their Steinway pianos.
A Primer on Action Geometry with Gary Green - Our understanding of the concepts of action regulation and touch adjustments ensures we meet the pianist’ s needs. Build a foundation of functionality as we analyze the interaction of components in an action assembly.

(E) One-Day Grand Piano Service with Don Mannino, RPT, Kawai - Watch as a used and abused Kawai grand is brought to life in the space of a full day service appointment with practical and efficient methods that create a pleasing musical sound. Learn how to prioritize and plan the day’s work: cleaning, keyboard easing and lubrication, fast hammer filing methods, and a session on grand regulation for maximum performance. See live demonstrations on action center service, grand action regulation, hammer shaping, full-piano voicing, tuning stability, plus snippets for concert tuning voicing.

(E) Interactive Grand Regulation with Roger Jolly, Samick - Take a step-by step look at how all the parameters of grand piano regulation affects each adjustment step.  This highly recommended class has been given on four continents.  Take the mystery out of the regulation process, and fully understand how the action is designed to work.  Regulate to achieve maximum tone quality, action speed of repetition, and subtlety of control.  Voice for all seasons and unwrap many of the subtle details of voicing to achieve performance tone. Focus on action and string termination to obtain the widest pallet of tone color.  Relate to what the pianist feels, hears and senses.

(E) Action Weigh-off for the Masses with Bruce Stevens, RPT, South Bay, CA Chapter –  Proper key balancing is the finishing touch on any fine action servicing or restoration.  For many technicians, this process can be confusing, difficult and time consuming.  See a visual demonstration of a method for balancing keys that is rapid, accurate and easy to understand. – Steinway B rebuild.

(E) Basics of Wood Technology with Les Jozsa, Resource Properties Specialist, Vancouver, Canada – Gain new insight into the properties of wood by learning more about tree growth, wood structure, and old growth/second-growth wood, drying and warp. Includes strength/stiffness of wood, differences between hardwoods and softwoods, wood density and wood grain basics.

(E) The Belly-Talkers Forum with Arizona technicians Nicholas Gravagne, RPT & Michael Spreeman, RPT - An open discussion on Belly Stuff. Bring your questions and experiences to class! Topics include scale design, soundboard assembly and downbearing in terms of theory and practice. Of special interest, a computer-generated wave file, along with accompanying visuals will be displayed illustrating the relative relationship of high and low impedance systems.

(E) Custom Restoration: The Difference, Point by Point with David Andersen, Los Angeles, CA Chapter – The labor and craft gap between commercial and custom rebuilding is huge, and so is the price difference. Using a restored instrument, we’ll go through the steps and protocols of each area of the piano in detail (with handouts).  Hear about whom the custom restoration client is, how to sell this work, and the love, intention, and artistry that drives this specialty. Finally, listen to a short concert by a world-class player - the ultimate pleasure, and the ultimate test, for our demonstration piano.  – Steinway D rebuild.

(A) Finding the Strike Line with Dale Erwin, RPT, Erwin's Piano Restoration, Modesto, CA - Ever installed a set of hammers with dismal results in the treble sections? Incorrect hammer strike lines produce weak sustain loss of power and lack of tone in the melody area. Discover how to isolate and remedy this commonly overlooked problem. Listen carefully as we explore these phenomena together using our custom restored Steinway B as a test case. Hear how finding the magic strike line sets the piano’s voice free. Also a two-minute method to find and use action ratio to your advantage when choosing hammer weights and new parts.

(E) Piano Restoration or Replacement with Franco Skilan, RPT, Los Angeles, CA Chapter – 1876 Steinway Style 3 - “Is my piano worth restoring?” Dive into this complex question with a look at sentimental attachment, availability of replacement components, budget and time frame for restoration and client expectations of look, sound and play of the completed piano. Consider the piano’s potential based on its history, current condition, construction and design. Explore various aspects of running a restoration facility: restorative measures available, identifying abilities, limitations and considerations of running a legitimate facility such as insurance, liability, permits and more. (I, A) Real World Rebuilding with Joe Garrett, RPT, Portland, OR Chapter – 1867 8’ Chickering Grand - See a demonstration of the resurrection of a “Basket Case.” Leave with a practical approach to restoration for the real world.

(E) Scaling with Virtual String Models in Mensurix with Bernhard Stopper, Tuebingen Germany - Evaluate a scale with standard static and dynamic parameters volume, contact time and audio output as measured on the virtual string models provided by the Mensurix scaling program. Discuss scaling theory and practice in design of new instruments and rebuilding and the further use of the string outputs in soundboard models.

(I, A) Small Shop Rebuilding –Steinway D with Dale Fox, RPT, Sacramento, CA Chapter & Brett Dearing, Sacramento, CA – Add to your knowledge base with this valuable collection of information covering fixtures, jigs, and methods used in a small shop.  Rib curving jigs and a portable pneumatic press set-up are demonstrated.

(E) Sweat the Small Stuff! with Rod Verhnjak, Southwest, BC Chapter - We all want to serve our clientele with non-compromising standards that achieve the best results. Find out what to evaluate when inspecting a grand or upright piano for restoration, especially if it has been restored once before. Learn how to evaluate whether to repair or replace parts and why not to leave the small details out.

(E) Tone Is Not for Tasting with Ed – 1943 Baldwin 9’ with Ed McMorrow, RPT Seattle WA - Introducing a new concept of “musically intelligible sound”, this concept forms the qualitative framework for specifying tone and touch quality.  The importance of this to everyone in the industry cannot be overstated.

ACTION REGULATION
(E) The 37 Steps of Grand Regulation with LaRoy Edwards, RPT and David Reed, RPT, Yamaha - Get to know the “37 Steps of Grand Regulation” as taught at the “Little Red Schoolhouse”.  See why the sequence of steps is so important in improving the touch of the grand piano.

(I, H) Are You Regulationally Challenged? with Rick Baldassin, RPT and Carl Teel (Renner USA) - When trying to remedy an action that doesn't function properly, timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial.  Ten action models will be prepared to malfunction in a variety of ways.  In the first period, class members analyze and propose solutions to these problems.  In the second period, proper diagnosis for each model will be shown, and models restored to proper function.  Plenty of time is included to discuss function of the principles of grand regulation that relate to each problem.  Preregistration required. Class limit 30.

(I, H) Are You Still Regulationally Challenged? with Rick Baldassin, RPT and Carl Teel (Renner USA) - No screws have been turned.  This "hands-on" follow-up to "Are You Regulationally Challenged?" is your chance to apply the principles gleaned during the previous session.  Renner PTG test action models and tools are provided to perform the regulation steps as outlined.  The Renner team will be available to provide feedback and add additional insight.  Seating priority given to attendees of the first session. Pre-registration required. Class limit 30.

(B, H) Basic Principles of Action Regulation with Ed Sutton, RPT, Piano Technicians Journal Editor and Israel Stein, RPT, San Francisco, CA Chapter - Explore the piano action through a series of exercises and discussions. Work in pairs on grand action models. Learn the relationship between various regulation functions and what effect each adjustment has on action function. Some tools are available for loan, but bring your own if you can. Preregistration required. Class limit 24.

(I, A) High Performance Regulation of the Kawai Grand Action with Don Mannino, RPT, Kawai - A new seminar for 2007, you’ll learn how to get the best performance from Kawai grand pianos. Includes discussion and demonstration of factory style regulating techniques, trade-offs of various regulation specifications to meet different needs, service pointers for getting performance back into worn actions, and a full top-to-bottom regulation process. Although this class features Kawai actions, much material is applicable to all fine grand piano actions.

(B, A, H) Regulation & Reality - Vertical with Mike Carraher, South Central, PA Chapter – We take a unique approach to vertical regulation with an emphasis on design limitations, function, and practical field application.  This is a hands-on class.  Action models provided, but bring your own regulation tools.  Preregistration required. Class limit 30. $25 fee.

(A, S) The Second Keyboard or…the Art of the Bump with Fred Redekop, RPT, Manitoba Chapter - Take an in-depth look at the heart of grand piano regulation.  See how we create a “second keyboard” at the point of let-off.  Learn new techniques for a beautiful regulation. Skills Station: focus on what we’re feeling for and how to feel for it. 

BUSINESS & NETWORKING
(E) The Business of Concert Work with Kathy Smith, RPT, Los Angeles, CA Chapter –  Learn about business and special projects in concert work.  After the piano is in good shape, you still must deal with various billing styles, contracts, tech riders, pricing, and scheduling.  Venues ask you to solve problems: pianos onto dollies, leg repairs, and special music desk and bench requests.  Includes lots of visuals and details with applications for non-concert work too.

(E, C) CAUT 101 – Long Range Planning with Eric Wolfley, RPT, Cincinnati, OH Chapter – Identify strategies for identifying and establishing a course of action to realize long-term goals for inventory management, career improvement and other topics.  We look at how the CAUT “Guidelines for Institutional Maintenance,” can be used as a tool to help navigate through the administrative maze.

(E) The Cost of Being in Business with Vivian Brooks, RPT, Brooks, Ltd. - Learn how to compute your cost per hour so you can accurately determine your charges to the client.  Feel confident about your fees or receive the validation you need to raise them.

(E) How Do I Get My Business Off The Ground? with Malinda Powell, RPT, Twin Cities, MN Chapter –  Technicians often say that they get their clients by “word of mouth.”  As beginning technicians, how does one go about doing that?  Find ways to get your name and credentials out to the public, teacher outreach, community involvement, and ways to keep your clients after that all-important first contact.

(E) How to Sell "You" with Teresa Severin, Dampp-Chaser Corporation –  Develop a personal strategic plan to build your piano service business.  Based on principles gleaned from success guru, Brian Tracy’s books Laws of Business Success, The Psychology of Achievement, and Communicate with Power.  Teresa shares her sales and marketing background of over 20 years.

See these keyboards on display and review the history, repairs, maintenance and tuning choices for these instruments. (E) Servicing the Yamaha Mark IV and Disklavier with David Reed, RPT and Fredy Atcheson, Yamaha - Take advantage of this overview of the features and functions found in the Yamaha Mark IV Disklavier piano.  Learn how to perform pedal adjustments, pedal, key, and sensor calibration, along with troubleshooting the Mark IV system. 

REBUILDING
(I) European-Style Grand Pinblock Replacement with Andre Bolduc, RPT and Christian Bolduc, Les Pianos Andre Bolduc, Quebec, Canada - Replacing the pinblock in a grand piano can be quite awkward when a solid piece is inlayed in the structure on both sides of the case.  Discover how to handle complicated pinblocks like Bechstein, Chickering, Shiedmayer, etc. 

(B, S) Recapping the Bass Bridge in an Upright Without Removing the Plate with Andre Bolduc, RPT and Christian Bolduc, Les Pianos Andre Bolduc, Quebec, Canada - See an easy way to replace split bridge caps on uprights without using epoxy or other glues to fix bridge pin problems.  Learn how to build a jig over the plate to remove the old cap and glue the new one.  This technique can also be applied to grand pianos. We will go through a Baker’s Dozen of them; what they act like, how to diagnose them, and how to fix them right the first time. Included will be sluggish and loose key and action parts, string and pedal issues, including hard-to-find squeaks, clicks, clunks and swishes.

(B, I) Clicks, Clacks, Squeaks and Groans with Paul Olsen, RPT, Twin Cities, MN Chapter - Those unwanted noises are sometimes hard to find, yet easy to remedy.  Systematically find and detect those noises and determine what sounds apply to which parts of the piano.  Pick up valuable tips on easy repairs in this “ears on” class.

Each participant will install and regulate a “set” of dampers on one of the 30 special models Schimmel has made for this convention with Renner’s assistance. (I) Get the Lead Out with Bruce Clark, Mason & Hamlin - Seen actions with 5, 6, or more leads in the lower bass? Without fail this implies poor action geometry. Wessel Nickel & Gross (WNG) Composite has designed parts from the ground up for those interested in intervention. Learn about installation using design concepts of action geometry. Part one covers basic concepts and terminology of action geometry. Part two focuses on installation details for new WNG action parts. Measure basics: location of the strike line, key line and key proportions.
